Pesticides suspected in pet deaths
"We've received five or six calls from pet owners describing similar symptoms before their dogs died suddenly at Capital Paradise [a villa compound] in Shunyi district," Mary Peng, co-founder of the International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS), told the Global Times on Tuesday.
A dog vomited and became unable to walk shortly after licking the grass in the Sanlitun diplomatic area last week. The area had been sprayed with repellent an hour earlier, according to Peng. Vets at ICVS were able to save the pup's life.
A receptionist for Doctors Beck and Stone Pet Health Care Center, in Shunyi district, told the Global Times that a sad pet owner from Capital Paradise came to them to ask the possible reason for his dog's death last week.
"His dog had already died when he came to us, and we could not offer him any help," she said.
Peng and some residents have noted that the dogs appeared to have had severe allergic reactions, possibly to a repellent that has been sprayed to ward off an infestation of ticks. They have expressed concerns that such sprays could also affect the health of children.
The Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau confirmed with Peng that the dosages of the tick repellent are higher than what's normally used to ward off mosquitoes. The frequency of spraying has also been increased from once a month to as frequently as twice a week, according to a letter from ICVS to Beijing pet owners.
Beijing Gloria Properties Management Ltd, which oversees Capital Paradise, has received several reports about dead dogs since last week, about one or two cases per day, an anonymous company employee said on Tuesday.
"We've been spraying pesticides for over 10 years, and nothing has happened before," she said of the repellent the compound uses to kill mosquitoes, flies and other insects every summer.
"That they were poisoned by pesticides is just one of the assumptions made by residents. The dogs could also have been poisoned by humans," she added.
The Beijing Patriotic Health Campaign Committee (BPHCC) cooperates with property management companies at residential communities to spray chemicals to kill mosquitoes, flies, rats and cockroaches, according to an employee with BPHCC's biological control department surnamed Yu.
