Summer reading: Savor the tangled web of relationships
"One Day" by David Nicholls: Follow the lives of Dexter and Emma by checking in with them on the same day each year for nearly 20 years. They meet on the day of their college graduation, have a brief interlude, from which each comes away with quite different feelings, and move on with their lives as the best of friends, through the idealistic years of their 20s and into the reality-filled years of their 30s. They change lifestyles, careers and lovers, yet always remain friends, exchanging witty banter. Dexter and Emma's story will make you reflect on whether it's worth holding out for the proverbial brass ring and the fact that what we often spend a great deal of time searching for is something that has been in front of us all along. Watch for the movie being released in early July. I'm looking forward to it. "Skipping a Beat" by Sarah Pekkanen: High school sweethearts Julie and Michael are anxious to break out of their sleepy small town in West Virginia and embark on lives opposite to their younger years. They marry and have a plan for achieving their dreams. Michael invents a sports drink in his early 20s, becomes the CEO of his own company and makes millions. Julie becomes a successful event planner in their new home of Washington, D.C. They have a beautiful estate and live the life of luxury. Somewhere along the way, though, they lose themselves as a couple. A near-death experience spurs Michael to give up all his money and possessions and rekindle the love he and Julie once shared. Julie's reaction may surprise you. You'll have to read to the very last few pages to see if there's a happy ending. "The Late, Lamented Molly Marx" by Sally Koslow: Molly Marx, a 35-year-old mother and magazine decorating editor, dies as a result of a bicycle accident. But was it really an accident? This book is told from the perspective of Molly from the hereafter while she observes the lives of her friends, colleagues, family, 4-year-old daughter, Annabel, and charming husband, Barry. Those who loved her, attempt to determine the truth regarding Molly's terrible fate throughout the story. Molly is forced to come to terms with the realities of the life she'd been leading, the choices she'd made and the relationships she'd believed were much different. Moms will likely relate to Molly as she realizes no matter what else happened during her life, being Annabel's mom brought out the best in her. It's in this knowledge that Molly finds redemption. "The Seven Year Switch" by Claire Cook: Jill has struggled to make a life for herself and her daughter, Anastasia, after her husband, Seth, left them for the Peace Corps seven years before. She's kept people at arm's length and protected her disillusioned and broken heart while preserving Anastasia's well-being and happiness. Seven years later, Seth returns and expects to pick up where he left off with his family just as Jill begins to trust her heart again. Anastasia, now 10, is ecstatic and easily welcomes her dad back into her life, but Seth's return stirs bitterness and anger in Jill. You'll feel for her as she must find it in her heart to let go and forgive to move on, both for her daughter and herself. If you enjoy "The Seven Year Switch," Claire Cook's new book, "Best Staged Plans," comes out this month. I've got a copy on reserve through the library already.Mid Hudson Library System - News

Mid-Hudson Library System gets $361332 in state grants | Basement ...
The Mid-Hudson Library System has been awarded $361,332 in public library construction grant funds, said Sen. Steve Saland, R-Poughkeepsie.
The grant funds are from $14 million in capital funds for public library construction provided in the 2010 state budget.
Grant recipients in Dutchess County include:
• $16,500 — Millbrook Free Library: For energy conservation through window replacement, using low-e argon double-glazed option and foam insulation in gable and rafters, new casings and finish trim, and minor lighting improvements.
• $18,700 — Red Hook Public Library: For new space creation, new subfloor, flooring, drywall, painting, handicapped-accessible washrooms, and new disability compliant entrance.
• $100,000 — Staatsburg Library: For a new addition with handicapped-accessible bathrooms, new access to basement and attic via interior staircases.
“New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. Many of New York’s local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are energy inefficient, cannot provide Internet and computer and other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring, and do not have sufficient space,” Saland said. “The funds will enable our libraries to finance the construction of additions to existing buildings and renovate existing space, providing improved space for all residents in our communities.”
The New York State Library has awarded 177 construction grants to public libraries and public library systems throughout New York state. The projects, which had a 50 percent match requirement, were reviewed and approved by the New York Library System Board.
