Detroit's Big Sean aims to be your summer soundtrack

Yes -- Big Sean's long-awaited debut album, "Finally Famous," comes out Tuesday.

And yep -- his mentor and label boss Kanye West collaborates on it, along with a number of other marquee names in hip-hop, including Rick Ross and Lupe Fiasco.

All of that could mean some national -- possibly international -- success for the 23-year-old from Detroit's west side.

But a real sense of arrival for Sean would come from getting one of his tracks blasted on repeat on Belle Isle this summer.

"Pulling up in their cars, chilling ...blasting it," Sean says with a laugh, visualizing what such a scene might look like. "That'd be an honor. That's what I used to do. I used to do that with Eminem. I used to do that with Dilla. I used to do that with the Chedda Boyz. I used to do that with Street Lordz, all that. It's tight that people can do that to my music."

Big Sean's sound is reminiscent of a younger "College Dropout" version of Kanye West -- this is music for the thinking hip-hop aficionado, but not so pretentious that it won't appeal to the commercial-radio fan. There's some old soul Motown there, spiced with some backpack hip-hop and a little bit of the fun bling-bling that has dominated much of hip-hop for the past 10 years.

Here's what he had to say about music, his collaborators and working with Kanye West:

QUESTION: How did you pick what tracks would make it on this album?

ANSWER: I just want it to be something different. I want it to be something that people could still relate to and still have fun to. If there's one thing I want to be remembered by it's that I followed my dream, and that's something that's not always easy to do.

I feel like following your heart always leads you to your pot of gold. I never want to look back on my life and be 50, 60 years old wishing I would've, could've, should've did something. So that's one of the messages that's really heavily conveyed on the album.

Of course some of the songs are just meaningless. Some of them are just for young people to just have fun, to have people dancing. You gotta make sure you have fun, especially as a new artist. Everybody wants to be the best rapper, I wanna be the best rapper, I'm going for that title too, but it's like "Man, just make sure you have fun while you're doing it."

Q: There are a lot of great collaborations on the album.

A: Of course, Kanye, Pharrell (Williams), Lupe and The-Dream are on it. It's some pretty good features on there. But I wanted to keep it to where it was still my story, so you get the maturity of me. I didn't want it to be a compilation album, but ... it's really a good body of work and all the features accent the songs.

In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle’s sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that’s spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson’s “Gotta Get Up”) as an axis that’s as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali’s elegant “Il Faut du Temps…”), vintage (Charles Trenet’s “Je Chante,” Jean Sablon’s “J’Attendrai,” Tino Rossi’s “Le Chant du Guardian”), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony’s French redux of “Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini”), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way. Also included are three cues from newcomer Marc Streitenfeld’s underscore, a nimble exercise in instrumental post-modernism whose electronica/folk/neoclassical mélange is as eclectic as the song choices, yet characterized by subtlety and grace. –Jerry McCulley

Ordered the soundtrack and immediately sent it back because many of the really good songs from the movie were omitted. I’ll just have to watch the DVD a lot to enjoy that music, especially when Russell Crowe and Marilyn Cotillard are sitting at the outside cafe watching the movie and listening to the song being sung. I believe the song is called Boum…not on the soundtrack. I would rather have had that than Patti Paige.
