Urmston rack up the runs but fail to register win
A devastating team performance with the bat at the tight Little Budworth ground in South Cheshire saw Urmston register 260/3 declared off just 45 overs.
However, despite having 49 overs to chase the runs, relegation threatened Oulton Park CC refused to take up the challenge and shut up shop very early to play out for a draw. Urmston collected 16 points to continue their recent run of form and move up to 4th place in the ECB Cheshire Premier League.
After a delayed start due to overnight rain Urmston were asked to bat on a challenging wicket that offered erratic bounce at times.
Openers, Craig Grindley (81) and Chris Watson (95) were quickly into their stride though and boundaries were soon coming regularly. Grindley was first to fall in the 24th over with the score at 122.
Grindley hit eight 4s and five 6s in his 75 ball knock.
Watson was then joined by skipper, Sumit Panda who is in a rich vein of form, and the two put on a 129-run partnership in just 18 overs.
Watson eventually fell five short of his third ton of the season and Panda’s thunderous knock of 75 came off just 65 balls and included ten 4s and three 6s. With the fall of those two wickets Urmston quickly declared to set up a challenging run chase.
However, Oulton Park were simply never in the chase as Adam Syddall (3/49) and tight bowling from Panda and Ian Grindley (2/52) ensured that they made few inroads into the Urmston score. Unfortunately, Oulton Park made an early decision not to chase the runs and with the wicket flattening out Urmston’s bowlers then found it hard to create opportunities.
Eventually the game petered out into a draw with Park finishing on 165/7 off 49 overs.
Urmston hope to return to winning ways as their efforts to gain ground on the top 3 in the league continues to take shape with the last game of the first half of the season this Saturday at home to local rivals Didsbury CC.
