Dedham's Fairbanks House hosts period craftsmen

Dedhamites traveled back in time to the art and lifestyles of the 17th and 18th centuries, on Sunday.

Field of the house Fairbanks - the oldest wood frame house in America - more than a dozen period artisans throughout New England in period costumes and other artifacts introduced during contentment Crafts demonstration plantation.

"It's a great event. For the first time that we are here, "said Deb Arscott, one of the hundreds of participants at the event Sunday, Aug. 14."We lived in the city 30 years, so this is the first time we were in the house."

Event organizers Fairbanks Jonathan and Peter Cook began organizing four months ago just to celebrate the 375th anniversary of Dedham.

They first worked together when they organized a similar exhibition to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Boston in 1980. Cook thought they should put a show together for the anniversary of Dedham.

"We have craftsmen here that I worked with over 30 years," said Cook."I called (and) I said, 'we are all together at home over Jonathan Fairbanks. So we are here today. "

Artisans include a basket maker, a manufacturer of aircraft and carpenter who showed people how to join wood, a weaver, a tailor tombstone, and others.

Bill Wasson rope made with a small wooden machine he built two years ago.

"Rope in one form or another has been used for thousands and thousands of years," he said. "Cavemen probably had the rope."

He demonstrated how the rope was made in the 17th and 18th centuries, he turns in his machine-oriented wood.

"I like the tailor. He is actively working on (clothes) as are many people craft here, "Jamie said Poulin." An interesting part of the event is that everyone is made to do things. "

The event began at 10 am with a game that told childbirth during the 17th and 18th centuries and the role of midwives had at the time.

"All this stuff is very interesting period," said Arscott."I love the cultural history and learn how things were done at different periods of time."

After the game, the visitors walked around the tables where artisans demonstrated their crafts.

Participants also continued visits to the Fairbanks House.

sod the 60s. i wish it was the 18th century « things i wish i'd ...

And goes "Yeah, I wish it was the 60". I was convinced of the truth of this statement for years, but lately I began to understand that in fact I really do not want either the 60 in all. Yeah, music and hair and clothes were good, but I have no legs or the confidence to a micro-mini skirt, and I certainly anxiety too much for the Cuban missile crisis. 60 years, it seems, are not for me. I want to go further than that. I want to be the eighteenth century.

Yes, I'm sure the eighteenth century smelt pretty bad. And everyone was probably very dirty. And I'd probably be dead incredibly young, and I would not be able to vote or to marry who I wanted or all of these things. And if I did nothing but landed gentry or the aristocracy, he was probably pretty shit. I get all that. But assuming that I managed to be a bit rich, it would be absolutely great.

Because - and I am absolutely convinced of this fact - I was looking quite stunning in period costumes. Give me a corset and a decent chest, and all my troubles would be covered and I'd just look stonking. And if I teamed up with giant, Duchess of Devonshire ridiculous hair, I would certainly be a winner. I like big hair, and it seems that what many of this century was about. I could definitely get involved with that.

But that's not all clothes and hair well. It's also me being massively pretentious, because I love literature in the eighteenth century. Pope? Brilliant. Burney? Lovely. Swift? Fielding? Yes yes yes! Everyone was dedicated to making fun of everyone, and I am a big fan of that. But they did it in a bright, intelligent manner which makes it my favorite of all periods of literature. And if I hung around long enough, so I make friends with the young Jane Austen. Because obviously, I would track down and force her to go out with me.

And then there are the houses - which I visit anyway - and men. Oh God, how I love the men of the eighteenth century. I have no idea why, but for some reason the sight of a man in panties made me collapse into a puddle style Alex Mack.I am a firm believer that every man looks better dressed as an aristocrat of the eighteenth century, and if I lived there, they would be EVERYWHERE. I would get goose on my stately home, with my hair and massive good books, receiving visits of men dressed impeccably and ridiculously attractive. It would be fantastic.
