It's the End of REM as We Know It

Note: When news broke Wednesday of REM "to call it a day," I received condolences via text, phone and Twitter I did when my grandmother died. In defense of my friends grandmother has never been a subject of trends, so as not everyone knew. But people do not know how much I identified with this band. And this piece is, in any stretch, a tribute to the band's final rock over America. It's just a little of what they meant to me. It's personal. Box Set Birmingham asked me to share with their blog, but I never had any intention to go beyond my own.Anyway, I hope all that makes your band music lover, you can see my point of view. loved.

I was a member of the Lauderdale County High School Marching Band (before I left after my ninth grade year for football), and I'll assume that was the seventh year. I liked the music, but I liked the music of my parents: most countries, I attended countless concerts (my first time to 5, a show in which a George Strait security guard took me to the stage during the set and allowed me to shake his hand) and Top 40.My old man had the best taste, as I remember, faded things like Van Halen and Huey Lewis & The News on me. Collection of tapes in his mother Volvo consisted mainly of Paula Abdul, Mariah Carey, Bonnie Raitt and Amy Grant. I became friends with a senior, and drumline captain brother of one of my good friends my age. I often spent time with an older crowd - soaking in their influence, their ideas and education. And he discovered it was REM Monster.

My stereo was always the same I got as a Christmas gift in the first year.He had a record player and dual cassette player (state of the art in 1988). I think we left our tiny house on the corner of Lee now, and I was to move into my new room, just down the street from my new friend on the Elk River. Josh Whitehead lent me a monster and he changed the course of which I would become.

I know it's strange. As we praised the career of the band in America today more rock, most 30-somethings are languishing for days in which Stipe mumbled over and had long hair. I grew to appreciate all that, too. But these days are the days these people, too, were 12.I did not turn 12 until 1994, and that's when I began to realize who I was. REM helped shape it.

I could not get enough.

2005-07-13 - HiFi Buys Amphitheater - Dave Matthews Band :: DMB Stream

After a hot, sticky day, relief came as DMB hit the stage. We had a great show tonight in Atlanta, a town with many familiar faces. The band is enjoying the process of constructing their set lists lately, having more songs to choose from than ever before. As we witnessed this evening, the mixture of new and old songs are leaving few in the audience displeased. To cap off an already memorable show tonight, Trey Anastasio stopped by to sit in on Jimi Thing and Louisiana Bayou, the last couple songs of the set. Those two songs alone, which not only featured Trey but also left plenty of room for the band members to shine, will leave us talking for a while. We're driving overnight to Tampa for a show tomorrow. See y'all there.
