The Lineup: Nike gets maximum exposure at US Open of Surfing

It's a very good price: The 2011 Nike U.S. Open of Surfing is free to spectators. How can that be, with all the expenses to putting on the show? That's easy: sponsorships. And Nike and its affiliates are among the biggest on the beach, reports Douglas Farmer of the Los Angeles Times: "Officially, the 2011 Nike U.S. Open of Surfing also hosts the Converse Coastal Carnage (a skateboarding competition), the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro (a BMX freestyle competition), the Hurley Walk the Walk National Championship (a high school fashion show) and the Pacifico Nose Riding Invitational (a longboard competition). Nike has owned Hurley since 2002 and Converse since 2003."

When city council voted in 2009 to dismantle the skateboard facility in Deerpath Park, it decided to set up an advisory committee to look at possible new locations for a skate park. Members of the committee met with city staff four times up to last October, at which time “changes in staff responsibilities interrupted that process” and the advisory committee’s work was put on hold, the report said.
