Trapp Family Lodge: d'abord une maison familiale
Johannes von Trapp est né à Philadelphie en 1939, quelques mois après l'arrivée de sa famille aux États-Unis. C'est le plus jeune des 10 enfants von Trapp. Il a aujourd'hui 72 ans, actif et dans une forme splendide. Il est président et directeur général du domaine depuis 1969, et est décrit comme «un dirigeant innovateur». J'ai eu la chance de le rencontrer, et d'en apprendre plus sur sa famille légendaire, et sur le Trapp Family Lodge.
«C'est ici que j'ai grandi, c'est ma maison. Il y a toujours eu beaucoup de monde ici, j'ai sept soeurs et deux frères. Nous avons toujours partagé cet endroit, au début avec les amis de la famille, maintenant et depuis plusieurs années, avec nos invités. Nous avons plus de 2500 acres de forêts, d'érablière et de prairie.
«Au début, en 1942, ma famille pensait réellement que nous pourrions faire vivre la famille avec la ferme ici. C'est une grande famille, avec beaucoup de bouches à nourrir. Mes parents ont probablement pensé que la terre ici était comme en Autriche, où il y a beaucoup de fermiers dans les montagnes. Mais, bien sûr, l'hiver est beaucoup plus froid ici, plus rigoureux. Alors il est devenu évident qu'une ferme ici ne supporterait pas une famille de 10 enfants», dit-il.
Pionnier du ski de fond
«À cette époque, l'industrie du ski en était à ses balbutiements, mais Stowe était déjà une destination reconnue pour ce sport. Il n'y avait pas assez de chambres, au village, pour accueillir tous les gens qui venaient de l'extérieur pour skier. Alors, comme nous étions partis en tournée pendant l'hiver, nous avons commencé à louer les chambres de notre maison aux skieurs. Lorsque nous n'étions pas en tournée, nous nous occupions du domaine. À différentes étapes de ma vie, j'ai fait tous les types de travaux ici, à l'exception de la cuisine!
«Le Trapp Family Lodge est réellement devenu une grande auberge, une destination touristique quatre saisons, complète, lorsque nous avons reconstruit, à la suite de l'incendie de 1980.
«Notre clientèle vient beaucoup pour le ski de randonnée, pour le ski alpin également, car il y a plusieurs stations dans la région de Stowe, et une partie de la clientèle vient simplement pour l'endroit et son site extraordinaire.
«Chaque membre de ma famille a découvert quelque chose de merveilleux dans ces montagnes, qui a enrichi sa vie. Nous vous invitons à venir découvrir cet endroit magnifique, qui fut d'abord notre maison, et maintenant le Trapp Family Lodge», conclut M. von Trapp.
