'Strictly Hip' rocks racetrack
The Fort Erie Racetrack was the hip place to be on Tuesday evening.
It was the second run in 2011 of twilight racing at the historic border oval and after all eight races went down the stretch, the Strictly Hip rocked the grand opening of the Tiki Bar, a new addition to the track this season.
Regarded as perhaps the premier tribute band in the world of Canadian music icons the Tragically Hip, it was also the first time in almost ten years the original lineup played tracks together from albums like 'Fully Completely' and 'Day for Night.'
"We haven't seen each other in a long time," laughed Jeremy Hoyle, the group's front man who exquisitely mirrors the sound of the Tragically Hip's Gord Downie.
Hoyle has spent nearly the last decade playing in the U.S with American players filling in for the original members. Now that he has more time in the Niagara area, getting the old band back together was an easy decision.
"It seemed like it was right," said Hoyle.
Guitarist Pat Raimondo is a local resident and musician who has been playing various instruments since childhood.
Lately, he has been working on his own unique brand of hip- hop music, producing for other artists and his own tracks.
He still plays guitar as his other moniker P8E, but performing with a full band and no rap influence came easily to him, even though it's much different than what he plays now.
"It felt great to play again, I haven't played rock shows in a while," said Raimondo.
Anyone who is a fan of the Tragically Hip, knows they have produced an extensive library of 11 studio albums. Mostly just the classics like 'Courage' and 'Blow at High Dough' were played on Tuesday, but Raimondo said he didn't struggle too much with the performance.
"Once you get into the songs, it all comes back."
Twilight racing runs every Monday and Tuesday during the months of June, July and August with a 4 p.m. post time for the first race.
On Saturdays and Sundays, the opening race comes out of the gate at 12:45 p.m.
Sandy Vine and the Midnights will be performing this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
