El Paso Times Pie Challenge winners announced; get recipes

They came from all parts of El Paso and the county. In all, 26 amateur bakers -- one even came from as far as Baltimore -- with pies of all varieties hoped to win the El Paso Times Pie Challenge.
There were upside-down apple pies, German cherry pies, applesauce semi-homemade pies and even a peanut butter and lime cream pie.
Contestants shared unsolicited stories about their pies. Some even talked at great length about the pie tins they baked their creations in.
But three pies stood above the rest according to our panel of judges -- Ruth Taber (a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals), L.D. Birkelbach (an El Paso Times restaurant reviewer) and Jane Steele (cooking instructor).
Best Fruit Pie
Fabens resident Sophia Kennedy's Nectarine Delight Pie captured 55 out of possible 60 points from our judges.
"I love nectarines and I've never seen a nectarine pie recipe," Kennedy said. "I make it two ways, one with and one without skin. We had a family vote and decided to bake this one with the skin off. It looks beautiful when you leave the skin on."
The pies were judged on overall appearance, taste, overall impression and for level of creativity.
"I have a strong passion for cooking and baking," Kennedy said. "I do the majority of the baking for my six children and 15 grandchildren, so I do all their birthday cakes."
One judge said the use of nectarines and the star-shaped cookies with pecans on top of the filling made it one of the most creative pies of the contest.
"I've been using this recipe for about 20 years," Kennedy said. "You can make the cutouts to correspond with all the seasons."
This was the first time Kennedy has entered one of her pies in a challenge.
"I've been in chili cook-offs before but never a pie challenge," she said. "This inspires me to enter more bakeoffs. My sister was the one who motivated me to do this one. I'm glad I did."
Joyce Ken Knight's apple pie was second and Michael Barger's apple pie was third.
Best Cream Pie
The recipe for Sharon Azar's Buttermilk Pie has been in the family for close to 50 years.
"Everyone that I make that pie for absolutely loves it," Azar boasts. "It's really an unusual pie. The longer you keep it in the refrigerator, the better tasting it is. It's just a really amazing pie.
