BRIEFS: Mount Vernon Avenue water OK again

AUGUSTA -- Residents on a stretch of Mount Vernon Avenue where water service was temporarily shut down Tuesday no longer have to boil their water.

The boil-water order for homes and businesses between the Bond Brook Bridge and 212 Mount Vernon Ave. was lifted Wednesday after samples indicated water from the area is safe to drink, according to Andy Begin, assistant general manager of the Greater Augusta Utility District.

A water main in the area was shut off for several hours Tuesday as part of a $17.3 million utility district project upgrading the sewer system to prevent overflows into Bond Brook.

Plans to close two lanes of Bond Brook Road where it crosses Bond Creek Bridge on Sunday are waiting for a week at least and perhaps more, district officials said Wednesday.

Heat Advisory issuedfor next two days

AUGUSTA - The Maine Center for Disease Control issued a notice heat Wednesday, saying parts of the Maine experience unusually hot weather over the next two days.

The heat and humidity will be more today and persist through Friday in the southern and south-west of the state, especially in the counties of York, Cumberland and Oxford. Night temperatures will be higher than usual.

The center said that in the past 10 years, rates of hospitalizations are significantly higher on the hottest days than on cooler days, both for heat illness and for other health conditions, such as heart disease, respiratory disease and kidney disease.

CHELSEA -- Selectmen scheduled an executive session for 5:30 today at the Town Office to discuss a legal matter with the town attorney.

Long Branch Schoolseeking instructors

BOWDOINHAM -- The Long Branch School of Maine is seeking instructors.

The school is opening in September and plans to "assist in relocalizing our economy by teaching self-reliance and sustainabilty while also offering an enriching experience for the mind, body and spirit," according to a news release.

AUGUSTA -- Augusta native Jason Maxim is one of 16 bachelors remaining on Country Music Television's new series "Sweet Home Alabama."

Bachelors from big cities and small towns are vying for the affections of Devin Grissom, of Alabama, in the second episode, airing at 9 p.m. today.
