Hauling in new makes, old models

OWASCO — Janet Haskin sat under a shade tree by her 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Sunday morning, thinking about her father.

“He would have loved it,” she said of the green-with-white-trim, four-door hardtop model she bought with her husband 10 years ago. “He was a mechanic. ... He could tell what was wrong just by listening.”

Haskin was one of hundreds of aficionados at Sunday’s Prison City Ramblers car show, a 20-year Father’s Day tradition at Emerson Park.

The sky was sunny and clear, perfect for sitting with a beverage in a lawn chair behind a 1960 Corvair, a refurbished Model T or a souped-up hot rod – and that’s exactly what many of the exhibitors were doing.

Sandy Siriano, of Solvay, had his 1999 Corvette for display and for sale. He recently bought a new one to replace it.

“You never miss when you look at it,” he explained. “You know it’s a Corvette.”

Siriano worked at a gas station as a teenager; his father was a Pontiac man, and it didn’t take him long to learn the right end of a monkey wrench.

“I was just always one of them guys where it if looks like it can be fixed, I try to fix it,” he said.

The Prison City Ramblers show, one of the biggest in the region, places no restrictions on entrants. That led to a bewildering diversity of vehicular visions – finned phantoms from the 1950s, muscular mini-trucks and a handful of clunkers that wouldn’t have looked out of place parked outside a grocery store.

John Dasson, of Palmyra, brought his 1987 Monte Carlo SS. In four years, he’s stripped and rebuilt the body and installed a custom engine.

Working on cars was a family bonding activity with his father and also with his own son and daughter.

“When I was younger, we used to go out and hot-rod around,” he said. “My kids were around cars since they were in strollers.”

His son, Steve, was at the show with a 1998 GMC Sonoma rejiggered out of recognition. He showed off the hydraulic lift, the suede upholstery and the spiked bolt covers under the hood.

“The funny thing is, it’s not even close to being done,” he admitted.

Besides hundreds of cars spread out over Deauville Island and Emerson Park, there was food, a charity raffle, music and a car corral.

Vendors at the flea market were clearly trying to pigeonhole the market: stacks of hub caps, pipes, belts and engine bits scattered over greasy tarps. Others sold matchbox cars, saucy bumper stickers and “Let’s Back Ike” pins.
