Nebraska man competes in tractor pulls

Dennis Johnson is your typical rural farmer.

In the shed at his family's rural Fairbury farm, all the expected farm amenities can be found.

Among the farm equipment, one item stands out from the rest, to say the least.

You won't find Dennis Johnson's crown-jewel tractor plowing the rows of a corn field.

Rather, his Agco Allis which he co-owns with his brother, Mark, can be spotted around the world pulling a sled in the Unlimited Super Stock Class of the Professional Pullers League (PPL).

Per PPL regulations, the puller, named "Shagnasty," maintains an original Deutz engine _ rated at 170 horsepower in 9670 tractors _ but the similarities end there.

The frame, body and nearly everything else was custom-built for the puller, which boasts a quad turbocharger setup on the inline six cylinder motor, cranking out as much as 5,000 horsepower.

"The engine block has to be what came in the tractor originally," Johnson said. "That's one of the rules. It has to be a stock farm tractor engine block.

"Then we started building," Johnson added with a devilish grin.

After getting the motor, Johnson, his family and others started building the body, which has no connection to the original style tractor.

It features a Rockwell QHD Axle Housing and custom built chrome moly frame rails, a material popular because of its favorable strength to weight ratio, that sits between the two massive 30.5 inch wide and 5.5 feet tall rear tires.

While the parts to custom build the pull tractor, which the Johnson Bros. Farm has owned since 1996, cost around $50,000, Johnson estimated that including the two year's worth of labor costs that went into the tractor's production, a similar tractor would sell for around $175,000.

While the tractor, which formerly sported 9670 sheet metal and was recently converted to an older D-21 style body, has an original block the rest of the engine has been heavily modified for competitions, in which the tractor pulls a 50,000 pound sled that continuously gets heavier through the run as far as it can.

"You can see the cylinder heads and everything is custom built," Johnson said. "To get motor support you have to do a lot of work. You need to put a lot of counter weight on the crank and aluminum rods overhead cam."

For an added boost the tractor runs four turbochargers, with three smaller turbos _ that peer menacingly out of the front grill _ that feed into one larger one located behind them that leads to the motor.
