Fastest kids in Grand Rapids crowned at Meijer State Games of Michigan

KENTWOOD -- Alona Dulaney and Kewaun Blackmon pulled away from the competition and never looked back to become the fastest kids in Grand Rapids.

Dulaney won the girls race in the MC Sports Fastest Kid in Grand Rapids 100-meter race Saturday at East Kentwood High School with a time of 16.69 seconds. Blackmon won the boys race in 16.22.

It was the first year for the event at the Meijer State Games of Michigan track and field venue.

"It feels pretty good," said Dulaney, an 8-year-old from Grand Rapids who runs for the Grand Rapids F.I.R.E Track Club.

"I like to win -- its fun. But if I would have lost, I still would have been proud of myself. It’s not about winning, it’s about having fun."

Blackmon, a 7-year-old sprinter from Grand Rapids, said a good start helped him to his win.

"I got out of my blocks fast," said Blackmon, who also runs for the Grand Rapids F.I.R.E. "Then, I just kept running forward. Then, I screamed when I went across the finish line."
 
Jazwinski has busy day
While Dulaney and Blackmon are budding track stars, a seasoned veteran had a busy, yet successful day herself, throughout Grand Rapids on Saturday.

Katie (Clifford) Jazwinski began her day Saturday by winning the 5K and 10K races at the Reeds Lake Run . Later in the day, she made her way to East Kentwood and won the MC Sports Elite Mile.

After running over nine miles at Reeds Lake, Jazwinski, a 1997 West Catholic graduate, won the Elite Mile in 5:01.57.

"After Reeds Lake, I went back to my parents’ house and took an ice bath and, then, tried to put my two kids (Jessica, 4, and Bobby, 2) down for a nap," Jazwinski said. "I had the least success there."

Having full days is nothing new for the five-time University of Michigan All-American who now lives in Dexter and is an accomplished marathoner.

"Last week, I did a 5K Saturday and, then, Sunday I did a mile at 8 a.m., 5K at 8:10 a.m. and a 10K at 10:40 a.m.," Jazwinski said. "It was pretty rough, but I love being around running and promoting fitness, and this is a great way to do that."

Jazwinski won last year’s Grand Rapids Marathon and qualified for the Olympic Trials, which are in January in Houston.

"I’m just concentrating on my short distances right now," Jazwinski said. "I’m running now just for my gratification and not the trials.
