11 Local Cos. Launch MN Clinical Research Alliance
The alliance—which has been in the works for more than a year—aims to support clinical research in the state through collaboration and education.
On Thursday, 11 local companies involved in clinical research launched an organization called the Minnesota Clinical Research Alliance.
The primary focus of the alliance is to educate the public about the benefits of participating in clinical research, according to Jeff Cosgrove, president at St. Paul-based Prism Clinical Research, one of the alliance’s 11 companies.
Cosgrove told Twin Cities Business that the alliance, which includes mostly small- to mid-sized companies, hopes to have some sort of centralized database available on its Web site. The database will ideally give the public access to a list of clinical trials that alliance members are conducting or involved in, and educational opportunities—like seminars and classes—that are offered across the state.
Prism typically conducts between 20 and 25 clinical trials each year, and the number of participants in each varies greatly depending on the type of trial, Cosgrove said. He said that clinical research sites in the region do well in terms of enrollment, but there is an ongoing demand for people to participate in trials.
“You can never have too many,” he said. “You have to continually augment your volunteer databases.”
One goal of the alliance, according to Cosgrove, is to decrease the number of people in the state who are against or skeptical about clinical trials and inform them about the benefits through “transparent education.”
Cosgrove said that people should be somewhat suspect when it comes to clinical trials as there is an inherent risk, but many don’t realize the how tight the regulations are that dictate how the trials are performed. He said that organizations like those participating in the alliance get unfairly stereotyped by a public that’s heard stories about abuse and fraud in research. He added that the 11 member companies have “exemplary records” with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
“Instead of reacting to every negative article [about clinical trials], the group wants to discuss the potential benefits that an individual might realize in considering a clinical trial,” Cosgrove said.
Cosgrove said that clinical trials can help people who were recently diagnosed with a life-changing medical condition—for example, Type II diabetes. Since being a participant in clinical trials involves ongoing monitoring, it can help patients adjust to lifestyle changes that come with certain medical conditions.
