It's Garage Sale season
Toni Pompura and Amanda Jewell headed straight for the boxes filled with clothes. They positioned themselves on either side of a box and began combing through the assortment. Yet despite their strategy, they came away grabbing the same item. A crisp white tank top speckled with blueberry and lime-colored dots.
“I saw it first!” Jewell said to her friend and fellow garage sale shopper, Pompura, who quickly responded, “But it’s in my tub.”
The two stay-at-home moms review the newspaper each week in search of garage sales.
“There are some good deals,” said Pompura, who discovered the cost advantage of buying gently used items from her mom.
“I use to garage sale with my mom,” she said. “We found some great bargains together.”
Pompura’s greatest find to date was a Ryobi grinder. The popular name-brand power tool was discovered at a garage sale new in the box.
“They only wanted $30 for it and new it retails for like $85 or $90,” said Pompura, who gave it to her husband.
“He’s a roofer and he loved it. His friends said, ‘Your wife may be cranky at times but she sure finds you good tools.’”
Jewell laughed. “Tools for your men are always good,” she said.
The seasoned garage sale shoppers said location was key in treasure hunting.
“We try to find garage sales where there is more than one on a street,” said Pompura.
To that end, the residents on Granada Street in South Casper delivered. Three families joined together and placed a newspaper ad to announce their annual neighborhood garage sale.
“We only hold it on Friday,” said Carol Mayer, who quickly added, “It’s all I have the strength for.”
The three-family ad stated that the sale, which featured a four-poster bed, 50’s costume jewelry, $1 for all ladies clothing and teachers supplies, would begin at 8:00 a.m. Shoppers, though, arrived sooner.
“We had some early birds here at 7:30 a.m.,” said Mayer, whose husband, John, assisted with the efforts.
“I’m the loader,” he said. “I load stuff from the house into the garage.”
“No, you’re a hoarder,” his wife of 47 years corrected. “I have to have these garage sales to try to control his impulse to hoard.”
Ironically it was the popular A&E program, “Hoarders” that prompted one Casper resident to have a garage sale.
“I watched an episode and it freaked me out for a while. It definitely lit a fuse,” said Crystal Padilla.
