Goodman looks to add storm warning access
The four action items already included for Goodman: adopting and enforcing standard building and residential codes; increasing education efforts for residents on how to deal with emergency situations from tornadoes to flu outbreak; repairing and installing a generator at the city well – a project that has already been finished; and the ongoing implementation of the National Flood Insurance program which the city adopted, but will continue to encourage compliance. Board member Keith Kohley asked that an advanced warning system, specifically the system in place in McDonald County, be added to the list. The program offers warning via cell phone, fax, landline and email and, audience members said, only 100 of the 500 eligible recipients under a SEMA grant have signed up. The board opted to check into the time left on the grant and its availability to Goodman residents. On first reading, the board approved changes to the personnel policy, pending second reading next meeting. The revised personnel policy gives the position of city clerk a five day, eight-hour workweek from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday; full-time employees a 40-hour workweek; part-time employees a 28-hour workweek; the police chief position a 40-hour workweek, with additional hours subject to mayoral approval; police officers 171 hours in a 28-day time period as directed by the police chief with additional hours subject to mayoral approval; requests police reserves to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours monthly; and gives the position of city supervisor a five day, eight-hour workweeks from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday – Friday with additional hours subject to mayoral approval. Salaried employees will work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Classified employees required to work additional hours will receive time and a half pay while overtime exempt employees will be given compensatory time off during FEMA and SEMA declared emergencies which must not exceed 20 hours monthly. Annexation of State Highway 59 south to Splitlog and B/C to Gator Road was also on the agenda. Former Mayor Calvin Wilson told the board that he left letters from the last annexation campaign in the mayor’s desk. The city received five letters in response to a mailing on the topic two years ago.
