Woman accused of hitting teen with SUV arrested
MARTINSBURG - A Martinsburg woman who allegedly fled the scene of an accident Sunday night after striking a teenage pedestrian with her sports utility vehicle was arraigned Monday on misdemeanor charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injury and obstructing a police officer.
Thelma Bush, 52, of 17 Cottage Road, Apt. 100, was later released on $15,000 bail.
According to court records, when questioned about the incident, Bush told police she didn't know she hit the teen and said she was driving to "get more beer."
Records show Sunday, at about 7:22 p.m., Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy C.S. Merson was dispatched for a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Belview Drive and Eagle School Road. When he arrived at the scene, he was met by one of the witnesses, later identified as Russel Bench. Bench told police that while driving behind Bush's vehicle, later identified as a blue Jeep Laredo, he saw the SUV strike a girl. The victim, 16-year-old Damia Crim, of Martinsburg, was walking west on Eagle School Road on the side of the roadway when she was struck. Bench told police that the victim flew into the air and landed in the grass on the same side of the roadway after being struck. Bench then followed the suspect's vehicle and wrote down its license plate number, records show.
After obtaining a statement from Bench, Merson spoke with one of the victim's friends, Daje Long, who was walking with the victim. In a statement, Long told police that she, another girl and the victim were walking in the grass when a woman swerved off the road and struck the victim.
"We saw her coming and then we got in the grass," Long told a reporter at the scene Sunday. "The lady just swerved in the grass to be smart and hit Mia. She stuck her middle finger out and kept going."
After the victim was struck, Long told police she ran to get her mother, who then called law enforcement. After obtaining a written statement from Long, Merson left the scene of the accident and went to 17 Cottage Road, No. 100, to attempt to locate the suspect. When he arrived at the apartment, he located a blue Jeep with a license plate number that matched the one Bench had described, records show.
When questioned, Bush said she was driving the Jeep a short time before the officer arrived. When asked if she knew she struck a girl, Bush told police she didn't think so, records show.
She then said that she saw three girls walking along the road, stating she swerved a little after another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction approached her Jeep.
