Design Notebook | In the kitchen, concrete mixes well with marble
I recently completed a budget remodel of my kitchen. I updated finishes and gave my kitchen a fresh look that is more in line with my personal style.</p><p>In my previous column, I talked about how great my white cabinets are in serving the look and function of my kitchen. Now I’ll continue with my countertops. I have been drooling over concrete for years. I love the organic look of it. I appreciate how it looks sturdy and strong, and how it mixes with the more refined details like the marble backsplash.</p><p>Not all concrete is installed the same way. Templates were made at the house, and the tops were fabricated off-site. The look is fantastic. It’s a countertop that allows for an under-mount sink and faucet holes cut specifically for my plumbing, no plate necessary at the base on the faucet. It was a happy day for me when I could finally throw out the silver plate that had been used at the base of my faucet to conceal other holes in the sink.</p><p>The sink has been in my basement for years. It was on back order for another client’s kitchen remodel, so an alternative was shipped in quickly. When the original sink finally did show up, I grabbed it for myself. It’s a stainless steel, one-basin Blanco sink. I like the ease of cleaning and the slightly industrial look. I upgraded to a sink that has linear corners, giving it a modern feel. </p><p>The size is impressive. With just one basin, I could almost fit my 8-year-old in it (he doesn’t go for kitchen sink baths anymore, but he could go for it in this sink!) It holds my cookie sheets and large pans, making it easy to wash them. It’s also able to hold a lot of dirty dishes and keep them out of sight — a fun trick that allows the family to be a little lazy in the cleaning department.</p><p>With the new counters, I took this opportunity to add an integrated soap dispenser. I purchased the slightly more expensive Blanco dispenser, but it looks so much better than the generic brand I was pondering. It allows for a clean countertop, and I love it. The downfall is kids can have a hard time reaching it, something to consider for families with small children.</p><p>Plumbing is like candy for me, but for those who prefer the decorative details, you’ll enjoy my backsplash. I always have loved carrera marble. The look is timeless. So we purchased a reasonably priced honed 12-by-12-inch tile. A longer waiting period accompanied the honed finish but it was so worth it: The matte surface works well with the concrete. </p><p>My handy husband got to work cutting the tiles down to 6-by-12-inch pieces. Then he tiled not only the backsplash, but he continued the offset brick pattern up around the windows and the limited space above the cabinets. This is probably one of the details that I get the most positive feedback on, and Todd is all too happy to accept all the accolades. I figure a small price to pay for a good installer.</p><p>Stay tuned for my next article with the last details on my kitchen. I can’t wait to share them with you.
