Maybe those of us not in the medical profession should have paid a little more attention in biology class. Eight of the top 10 highest-paying occupations in 2010 in the Memphis area are in the medical field.

Obstetricians and gynecologists are at the top of the list in the Memphis area with $234,480 in average annual earnings for 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics annual compilation of wage estimates by area and occupation.

Coming in second is a group of physicians and surgeons not broken down into specialties among the other medical professions. That group brought in $218,790 on average last year. Family and general practitioners earned $193,830, pediatricians $185,700 and psychiatrists $178,310 in 2010.

Chief executives represent the only business profession among the top 10 highest-paying occupations. CEOs earned an average of $171,440 in the Memphis market.

Exact annual salary estimates for surgeons, anesthesiologists and internists were not available; however, BLS estimated those professions averaged more than $80 an hour or $166,400 a year.

Dentists rounded out the top 10 with an average of $161,540 in annual earnings.
