Gallaudet volleyball summer camps in full swing at Texas School for the Deaf
AUSTIN, Texas – The 2011 Gallaudet University volleyball summer camps being held at the Texas School for the Deaf got underway last Thursday and will run until June 23. The setters/hitters camp ran from June 16-18 and was geared for high school players. The six-day fundamental camp for girls ages 10-18 started on Saturday and will run through Thursday, June 23.
The two different camps had 58 players show-up from eight different states (California, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin) and the District of Columbia. Some of the campers hail from the California School for the Deaf, Metro Deaf School, Model Secondary School for the Deaf, Oklahoma School for the Deaf, Texas School for the Deaf and Wisconsin School for the Deaf. The fundamental camp has 43 campers this week.
"We enjoy seeing every camper getting better from the first session to the last one. That's what it is all about," said Gallaudet volleyball coach Lynn Ray Boren , who is running the camp. "In the setter/hitter camp the participants improved after going through breakdown drills. They all displayed a strong knowledge of the game and improved on passing."
The campers go through various drills during the day including passing, serving, setting, floor defense, attacking and blocking. In the afternoon sessions the campers go through 3-on-3 tournaments and in the evening they participate in 6-on-6 scrimmages.
"We emphasize a lot of passing drills in both underarm and overhead formats because it is essential to be able to control the ball during practice and games," said Boren.
