Sellout crowd to honour Robyn Broughton
Robyn Broughton's outstanding netball coaching career will be celebrated at a tribute dinner at the Ascot Park Hotel this month.
The legendary Southland coach mentored Southern Sting to seven titles in the 10 years of the National Bank Cup competition. She also steered Southern Steel to two semifinal appearances in her four years in charge of the trans-Tasman franchise.
Broughton's reign as Steel coach ended in controversial circumstances at the end of this year's campaign when she opted not to reapply for her job after it was advertised.
The veteran coach was later snapped up the Wellington-based Central Pulse, who she will coach in next year's ANZ Championship.
The Broughton tribute evening will be held on Sunday, June 26, beginning at 5.30pm, with doors opening at 5pm. Broughton has also been a long-serving coach of the Verdon College senior A team, with the night doubling as a fundraiser for their trip to Christchurch in late August to attend the South Island secondary schools netball tournament.
Several former Sting and Silver Fern players, who have been inspired by Broughton will speak at the event, with Cycling Southland chief executive Nick Jeffrey the master of ceremonies.
Verdon senior A manager and event organiser Karen Telfer said there had been phenomenalinterest in the night, with the 400 available tickets selling out within a matter of days. A waiting list had been drawn up.
"It's a shame we can't knock down some of the walls in the Ascot and make it even bigger. I feel sad for some of those good, loyal ones who missed out," Telfer said.
Raffles and an auction will also be held on the night with items including a signed Silver Ferns' singlet, from last year's team.
