Independence Day: This weekend is Independence Day weekend, wherein we celebrate our independence from monarchies and the establishment of our country as a sovereign nation. Local cassette tape collective Space Idea Tapes uses the Fourth of July as an impetus to celebrate its own independence on Monday, hosting the Spit Fest mini-festival at its Space Idea HQ. Space Idea is a haven for a variety of left-of-center projects, including skuzzy folkers The Choir Quit and metaphysical bedroom dance music purveyor Pornojumpstart. (You might remember the latter from “Almosthere,” included in last year’s Great Columbia Mixtape series.) Both The Choir Quit and Pornojumpstart will play sets during the all-day event, as will Jefferson maydaymayday, Mammal Fight, Cave Dweller, Milton Hall, Roomdance, Wall&Void, Captain Gascid and Pregnant Spore, a Maryland-based psychotropic noise act with a Space Idea cassette release. The American Dream: It’s fitting that Memphis rapper Yo Gotti is the featured performer at Saturday’s American Dream All White Concert at Metro Live; after all, Yo Gotti was the featured guest on Young Jeezy’s hit “All White Everything.” Gotti hails from the same Memphis scene that birthed Three Six Mafia and Eightball and MJG, and his street-tough lyrics are informed by his days in Memphis’ infamous, crime-ridden Ridge Crest neighborhood. A star on the mixtape and independent circuit for much of the millennium, his major label debut, Live from the Kitchen, is set to drop via J Records on Sept. 6; its singles, though, including “We Can Get It On” and “5 Star,” have been sprinkled on hip-hop stations for the past two years.
