Jay Siegel and the Tokens perform '60s smash hit at Savannah Center

THE VILLAGES — Fifty years ago this coming December, listeners traveled to a mighty jungle where a lion sleeps, and a rather high voice introduces the song.

Jay Siegel was that voice, and the Tokens provided the rest of the vocals for “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” in 1961, which became a No. 1 hit for the vocal group.

“It’s a haunting melody, for one,” group member Billy Reid said. “I love harmony. It’s so off-the-wall — it’s not an oldie. It never died.”

“Even the young kids today know the song,” added member Jay Traynor. “It’s a simple tune.”

“It’s in movies, in sitcoms on TV, it’s in commercials,” Siegel said.

The vocal trio brought that and other songs to life during the first of two performances Monday night at Savannah Center. Proceeds from ticket sales benefited CERT, the Community Emergency Response Team in The Villages.

Rocky and the Rollers threw a few unplugged tunes into its opening set, with drummer Gerry Seader playing three tall boxes with wooden spoons. They also paid tribute to the late Carl Gardner, the original lead singer of the Coasters.

Then the Tokens arrived on stage in matching suit coats, kicking things off with “Tonight I Fell in Love.” Backed by Rocky and the Rollers, the three then put their stamp on such songs as “Portrait of My Love,” “Please Write,” My Girl,” “One Fine Day,” “Earth Angel,” “You Send Me” and “The Wanderer.”

The Tokens ended the evening on a familiar high note with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”

Siegel told the audience that every night he says a prayer that those falsetto notes come out of his mouth. The audience cheered when he sang the opening notes, and they even got to sing the high “wheeee” part.

Jose Mendoza, a Village of Tall Trees resident, was hearing the Tokens in person for the first time Monday night.

“It was very nice,” Mendoza said. “They blended together. After hearing them tonight, they sound the same (as the original single).”

Mendoza brought the 45-rpm record of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” and Siegel signed it after the show.

When Mendoza first heard that song back in the 1960s, he said “it was just different.”

Back in high school, Siegel had heard Pete Seeger perform the South African folk song called “Wimowet.”

“I thought it was a great piece of music,” Siegel said. “I thought, ‘Oh, I could do that.
