Hundreds treated for heart disease every year

It will take about a month to talk about the different types of heart disease, was the reply to a question posed to Dr Anand Rampersad, a cardiologist associated with the Heart Care Foundation at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC), Mt Hope.
He was however willing to discuss some of the major ones which affect persons living within the Caribbean region. Over 400 patients, he said come into the EWMSC every year to be treated for heart diseases. These include, he said, adults and children.
According to Dr Rampersad, one of the most common types of heart disease is ischaemic heart disease also known as myocardial ischaemia. Ischaemia is a reduced blood supply usually resulting from blockage of the coronary arteries. Rampersad said this affects around 500 persons per million of the population. Symptoms include angina or chest pains with exertion and a decrease in tolerance of exercise. Unusual symptoms which also occur is chest pain without exertion, pain in other parts of the body or worsening angina.
The risk of ischaemic heart disease increases with age, smoking, hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol levels), diabetes, and hypertension (high blood pressure), and is more common in men and those who have close relatives with ischaemic heart disease.
Of the three Rampersad spoke about, this type of heart disease is preventable. Ischaemic heart disease is a lifestyle one which can be corrected by exercise, diet and proper management of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, he said. Recently heart disease has been related to stress, he added, so stress management can help reduce the risk of this type of heart disease.
Ischaemic heart disease can be diagnosed with an electrocardiogram, blood tests (cardiac markers), cardiac stress testing or a coronary angiogram. Depending on the symptoms and risk, treatment may be with medication, coronary intervention (angioplasty) or coronary artery bypass surgery.
Aortic and mitral valve disease, Rampersad said, is prevalent in the region because of a higher than usual incidence of rheumatic fever.

Do you need a Leaking heart valve surgery? | Leaking Heart Valve
Usually people have so many misunderstandings about Leaking heart valve and its surgery. To begin this article I feel important to tell you all that if you have been diagnosed for a Leaking heart valve then it doesn’t mean that you need to have a Leaking heart valve surgery and even if you are required to go through a surgery then it is not important that it has to be an open heart surgery. Most of the people think if one or more of their heart valves are leaked or blocked then they will definitely have to go through a heart surgery and most preferably from an open heart surgery. This concept is totally false as it depends on the condition of valve leakage. You can’t determine if you need to go through a surgery process or not. It is your physician that will tell you if you have Leaking heart valve or not and if you have one then it is better to consult with a heart specialist. A heart specialist is the one who will be able to determine if you need medication for the cure or you need to go through a surgery process. If you will need heart surgery then that heart specialist will let you know.
In most of the cases heart specialists are surgeons too but if that heart specialist is not a surgeon then he will refer you to a heart surgeon. That heart surgeon will examine the leakage of your valve and finalize what kind of heart surgery you need to go through. So you see all these things happen in a systematic way but only if you will want them to. Listening to other people is good but always do what you doctor suggests you. You must always keep in mind that you are not a doctor to select a treatment plan for you.
